The little boy in the story has realised that all the males in his family have blue shadows, strong and manly, but his own shadow is pink: ‘My shadow loves ponies and books and pink toys, princesses, fairies, and things not for boys. As the boy attends his first day of school, he decides to wear a dress because that is what his shadow likes, but as soon as he goes into class, he feels out of place. Our youngest son also loves the story, and it's brilliant giving him exposure at an age where he doesn't understand the depth of meaning, so that he can hopefully grow up without the societal gender constructs/mindset/opinions of previous generations. The pink shadow likes things that are for “girls only” and “not for boys,” but that is what the little boy likes best.

Books are a perfect way to introduce tough topics when someone might think they are the only one that has experienced a specific problem. Not sure I like the pink/blue dichotomy, because it did feel like it was reinforcing the gender binary and thus undermining the central thesis of the text.
